Follow the footprints of the legendary Bavarian “Mad King” Ludwig II on a full day tour and visit one of the most famous palaces and castles of Europe, the fairy-tale castle of Neuschwanstein. King Ludwig II, who already became the king of Bavaria at an age of 18, was more a shy dreamer and admirer of Wagner´s opera music, living in his own fantasy world, rather than the head of state with rights and duties. Inspired by his dreams he spent a lot of money in constructing his own castles, like Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and – most important- Neuschwanstein. He has been the Bavarian king for 23 years and died under mysterious circumstances in 1886.
Leaving the city of Salzburg to the west we will drive through rolling Bavarian countryside past lake Chiemsee and via Bad Tölz to the neat, little town Oberammergau, which is known for the Passion Play performed every ten years. There, beautiful paintings on the houses, the fine art of woodcarvings and many shopping places will please you. After a nice break we will continue our way via the castle of Linderhof and the beautiful lake Plansee, until we reach the town Füssen with the highlight of our tour, the nearby castle of Neuschwanstein, perched on a rock high above the town and surrounded by a pittoresque lake and mountain area. From the Neuschwanstein parking lot a horse-drawn carriage will take you up to the entrance of the castle. On a guided tour you will learn a lot about the fanciful life of the Bavarian king and you will be astonished by the splendour of the castle´s halls.
On the way back to Salzburg we will have a stop at the famous pilgrimage church Wies, a prime example of German rococo style and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
